On October 12, the Huangbo Culture and Sino-Japanese Folk Exchange Academic Seminar and Huangbo Culture: the Pearl in the History of Sino-Japanese Exchange (Chinese-Japanese Bilingual Edition) book release conference was held in in our university. The event was presided over by Vice President Chen Zhiyong. President Liao Shenji extended a warm welcome to the participating experts and scholars. He briefly introduced the significance of writing the Chinese Japanese bilingual book that spreads Huangbo culture. He said that since the university is located in Fuqing, the birthplace of Huangbo culture and the core area of “21st century Maritime Silk Road”, it is our unshirkable mission to strengthen the research on Huangbo culture and Maritime Silk Road and promote the inheritance and innovation of Chinese traditional culture. He hopes that the official publication of the new book will attract more scholars to join in the study of Huangbo culture and cooperate in interdisciplinary, cross-industry and multinational in-depth study, with the aim of building a hub for the research on Huangbo culture and Maritime Silk Road, which will promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and Japan and make contributions to the building of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and a community with a shared future for mankind.
On behalf of Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Fujian Province, Huang Shaorong, the Deputy Director, expressed congratulations on the publication of the book. She pointed out that Huangbo culture has a long history and has written a unique chapter in the history of exchanges between China and Japan. She spoke highly of the fruitful achievements made by the University in recent years. She hoped that the University can give play to the academic accumulation of Huangbo culture to conduct academic research and cultural exchanges and enhance mutual understanding and mutual trust between Chinese and Japanese people. She also hoped that the University will create conditions to encourage more students to actively participate in the cause of China-Japan friendly exchanges, and carry out innovative activities with regard to exchanges and visits, cultural forums and cloud dialogues, so that young people can help to create a better future for Fujian's foreign relations.
Li Jingxiu, Deputy Director of the Publicity and Liaison Office of the Provincial Publicity Department, said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. The book will help Huangbo culture,gain in popularity among the public, especially the young, thereby promoting and stimulating the development of people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, and enhancing the confidence in our culture.
Liu Lisheng, Editor-in-Chief of JP-Top News, also congratulated on the official publication of the new book. Then President Liao Shenji unveiled the book, along with our honorable guests, and presented the book to some organizations, including the Fuqing Municipal Committee of CPPCC, Fuqing Federation of Social Sciences, Wanfu Temple of Huangbo Mountain, Japan-Asia Pacific Tourism Association and Fuqing Huangbo Culture Promotion Association.
Huangbo Culture: the Pearl in the History of Sino-Japanese Exchange (Chinese-Japanese Bilingual Edition) was compiled by a group led by President Professor Liao Shenji and published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press. The book traces the origin and development of Huangbo culture and describes the communication and interaction between Huangbo Zen monks, centering on Master Yinyuan, and all sectors of society during the Edo Period. Rich in illustrations and accompanied by videos, it shows the customs jointly formed by China and Japan in the process of economic, social and cultural exchanges, as well as the artistic achievements of literature, calligraphy, painting and architecture with great humanistic spirit. By combining traditional paper books with digital resources, it vividly demonstrates the practical value of Huangbo culture as a bridge of friendship between China and Japan, and interprets the long-term significance of dialogues between civilizations in an open and inclusive way for promoting world peace, mutual trust and development. The book is known to be the first popular book about Huangbo culture written in both Chinese and Japanese.
This book release conference not only marks a new stage of our university’s study on Huangbo culture, but also strengthens Huangbo culture research and promotes the Sino-Japanese cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
