FPNU Profile

Fujian Polytechnic Normal University (FPNU) is located in Fuqing, a nationally renowned hometown of overseas Chinese and one of China's top 100 county-level economies in southern Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province. The university currently operates two campuses—Wumashan and Shizhushan—spanning nearly 80 hectares.

Established in 1977 by the People's Government of Fujian Province, the university originated as the Fuqing Branch of Fujian Normal University. In 2002, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary celebration, Comrade Xi Jinping—then Governor of Fujian Province—sent a congratulatory letter encouraging the university to "further enhance teaching quality and operational efficiency, and contribute more significantly to advancing Fujian's reform, opening-up, and modernization."

FPNU commenced undergraduate education in 2002 and was officially approved by the Ministry of Education as an independent public undergraduate institution in 2019. As the only applied undergraduate university in Fujian dedicated to vocational teacher education, it has been included in several key provincial initiatives: Fujian's First-Class Applied University Development Program, Fujian's Master's Degree Granting Unit Cultivation Program, and Fujian's "All-Round Education" Comprehensive Reform Pilot Program. Since its founding, the university has nurtured over 80,000 graduates.

The university comprises 13 secondary colleges offering 42 undergraduate programs, including 2 first-class applied discipline construction projects and 6 master's degree cultivation programs, with a full-time student population of over 12,000. It boasts 6 provincial first-class undergraduate programs, 5 provincial industry-oriented specialty programs as well as 6 provincial pilot programs for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. Three industry-academia integration platforms—Yuanhong Food Industry College, Chemical New Materials Industry College, and NetEase-Digital Media Creativity Modern Industry College—have been recognized as provincial-level industry colleges. With disciplines spanning eight fields—liberal arts, sciences, engineering, education, economics, law, management, and the arts—the university has developed a distinctive "Food+" disciplinary framework. This model builds on its strengths in food science while integrating emerging areas like artificial intelligence and big data to foster interdisciplinary convergence in materials science, marine studies, economics, and communication. Notably, the university's Packaging Engineering program ranked first in the 2024 Alumni Association's national ranking of Top Applied Undergraduate Programs in China. The faculty comprises over 700 full-time teachers, nearly 300 of whom hold doctoral degrees, with more than 40% holding senior professional titles. The university has attracted a number of high-level talents including leading experts from the national "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, nationally recognized "Four Batch" talents, and Fujian Class-A provincial talents.

Leveraging its strategic location in Southeast Fujian's manufacturing hub, the university actively aligns with Fujian's "Four Major Economies" development strategy, national-level development zones, and key industrial clusters valued hundreds of billions. These efforts have significantly enhanced its capacity for organized scientific research. FPNU is home to distinctive research institutes including the Indonesia Research Institute, Huangbo Culture & Maritime Silk Road Research Institute, the Arts & Crafts Research Academy and the Center for Overseas Chinese & Cross-Cultural Communication Studies. The university has established over 20 provincial and municipal scientific research innovation platforms, such as the Fujian Higher Education Engineering Research Center for Flexible Food Packaging Technology. It has also been designated as the China Qiaoxiang (Hometown of Overseas Chinese) Research Center at Fujian Polytechnic Normal University. Since 2021, FPNU has secured approval for more than 200 provincial- and ministerial-level research projects, received nine provincial and ministerial-level scientific achievement awards including the Ministry of Education's Scientific Research Achievement Award, and had 103 policy advisory reports adopted by national ministries and commissions. The university has undertaken over 700 commissioned projects from government agencies and enterprises, achieving significant breakthroughs in multiple fields. These include vibration prevention and control for the high-frequency components of "Hualong One" nuclear power unit, development of key functional coatings for sunroof glass in new energy vehicles, innovation in chemical new material production processes, enhancement of critical performance indicators for plastic piping systems, quality and efficiency improvements in marine aquaculture, and novel processing techniques for marine food products. Two research teams—the "Automotive Artificial Intelligence Team" and the "Marine Food Full Industry Chain Technology Innovation Team" have been recognized as Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Talent Teams.

The university plays a pivotal role in cultivating vocational educators across Fujian. It established the Fujian Alliance for Vocational Education Teacher Development, which now boasts over 138 member institutions, covering nearly all secondary vocational schools in the province. Through strategic partnerships with municipal governments, the university has co-established 10 affiliated secondary vocational schools and 21 vocational education base schools across the region. Recognized by the Fujian Provincial Department of Education, the university hosts the Provincial Vocational Teacher Training Center, which coordinates comprehensive teacher training programs, organizes provincial vocational teacher skills competitions, and oversees the certification of "Dual-Qualified" instructors who possess both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. The university has also established specialized research platforms such as the Institute for High-Quality Vocational Education Development and the Fujian Secondary Vocational Moral Education Research Center. These institutes are at the forefront of vocational education reform, advancing initiatives such as the implementation of "All-Round Education", the development of articulation systems linking secondary and undergraduate programs, innovation in higher vocational enrollment mechanisms, and the publication of the annual Fujian Vocational Education Quality Report. The university's innovative approaches to educational reform and teacher development have gained national recognition, with its practices featured in China Education Daily. It has become a cradle for Fujian's vocational school development and a nurturing ground for the province's distinguished teachers, principals, key faculty members, and class advisors.
